As a local photographer who came to Jackson for it’s outdoor fun and beauty, Jay Nel-McIntosh has made a name for herself as a photographer in this picturesque town. Here are a few of her tips for capturing the beauty of the Jackson area whether you are a local or a visitor.

Framing

You may have heard the term “Rule of Thirds” which leads to a balanced and compelling photo. Essentially, break down the scene, dividing your photo up into three parts both vertically and horizontally. Rather than placing your subject, whether that is a person or the Tetons in the center of your frame, think about putting the person off to one side, or the horizon line in the top 1/3 of the picture or bottom.

Lighting

While you can get great shots, in natural light all throughout the day, the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset is called “The Golden Hour” for a reason. Images are softer, warmer and have a more romantic feel. The grass glows, people don’t need to squint at the camera and with a few clouds in the sky, there is a drama to be captured. If you can’t shoot during that time, just remember keeping the sun behind you as the photographer helps to keep your scene well lit, and reduce shadows.

Patience

Whether you are shooting wildlife, people or landscape a patient photographer is the one that gets the best shot. Some careful planning ahead and being in the right place at the right time is also essential, but it’s waiting for the right moment to press the shutter that wins you the magic photo. Let clouds roll past so that the sun illuminates your scene, wait for that moose to lift it’s head and look right at you, capture your friend in the moment rather than posed.
